BRASS Camp 2019 – it’s BRASSapoolooza!

When a child is diagnosed with cancer, the patient is not the only one effected, the entire family is. That is why we started up BRASS Camp, a week-long adventure for siblings who have a sibling currently on treatment or are bereaved.  This year, BRASS hosted 107 campers in late-July at Camp Maria in Leonardtown, MD, where siblings have the adventures of crabbing (the camp site is along Breton Bay), canoeing, sports, crafts and so much more!   Our musical camp theme this year was BRASSapoolooza. In keeping with our them we welcomed the band, Groove Span, and country line [...]

A Fantastic Time with Fantastic Friends

Fantastic Friends Weekend is a unique program in that the patient gets to bring a friend from home or they can choose to come alone. It is incredible to watch these teens (ages 13-17) integrate and bond and how they accept their friends even though they don’t know what the patient is experiencing. Their friends get to go home with a bit more understanding of what the patient goes through. This year we stayed at Camp Horizons at Valley Pike in Harrisonburg, VA. We welcomed 20 patients and 12 friends and spent the day at Massanutten Water Park. The water [...]

Life was a Beach at Young Adults Weekend

Thank you to our sponsor the 12th Annual Joan Hisaoka “Make a Difference Gala” YAC Weekend 2019 gave an intimate group of nearly two dozen young adult survivors and volunteers a two and a half days of relaxation, resource-sharing, and camaraderie at Airfield 4-H Center in Wakefield, VA. We led off the experience with some informal get-to-know-you activities and conversation well into the night. The highlight of the weekend was a day-trip to Virginia Beach on Saturday, where the group braved the chilly Atlantic waves, lounged in the sun and sand, and enjoyed a delicious taco bar courtesy of the [...]

What It Means to Me

Recently, we had a chance to speak with Jenny Hahn, President of FD Associates, one of our most generous corporate partners about how they have been impacted by Special Love.  Why donate to Special Love? I suspect that most corporate giving comes from a connection to a specific cause. For our small family owned company, our connection to Special Love was because of my son, Ian, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 1997. We were introduced to Special Love through Becca’s Run and the Lilly family, and started actively raising funds for Becca’s Run in the years preceding [...]

Terrific Tidewater 2019

Tidewater 2019 was Terrific From the record-setting crowd to the warm, windy fun, this year’s Tidewater Family Weekend was memorable in every way. We stayed at the Southeast 4-H Conference Center in Wakefield, VA, with beautiful lakeside views as far as the eye could see. Families checked in on Friday night and soon enjoyed get-acquainted activities courtesy of State 4-H Director Jeremy Johnson, who led introductory games using webbing from the challenge course. Soon afterward, our weary travelers nodded off to the sound of the spring peepers surrounding Airfield Pond. Saturday morning started bright and early with a breakfast [...]
