Director of Development 

Special Love, Inc. is a nonprofit serving children and families dealing with the unimaginable impact of childhood cancer by providing strong a community of support through free camps and weekend programs, emergency financial aid, educational scholarships, and peer-to-peer support.

We are currently hiring a Director of Development based in the Greater Washington D.C Metro area to engage with current donors, while securing new avenues of revenue. This includes solicitation of large dollar and multi-year corporate sponsorships, and execution of Special Love’s Annual Gala.   

This is a full-time, hybrid office-based position who will work with the management team to enable Special Love to continue its mission.


The Director of Development plays a crucial role within the Special Love team, requiring a seasoned development professional.

Working with the Executive Director and the Development team, the Director is responsible for all aspects of the organizations fundraising initiatives, from strategic planning to execution, including major gift fundraising, annual giving, planned giving, special events and campaigns.  He/she will be responsible for growing the development program, increasing and diversifying revenue, strategic relationships and strengthening the recognition of Special Love. 

In addition, the Director of Development is responsible for maintaining and strengthening current partnerships and supporters while building new relationships.

The Director of Development must obtain a strong understanding of Special Love’s mission and programs and possess a strong empathy for the lives of the children and families Special Love serves. 

Overall Responsibilities

  • Understand the vision and goals and priorities of Special Love to strengthen awareness.
  • Develop and execute the overall fundraising strategy, budget and annual fundraising plans in support of Special Love’s programs and services, as well as support for strategic priorities for growth and sustainability.
  • Develop, increase, and manage the fundraising capacity, including planned giving and future campaign opportunities.
  • Maintain and build strategic relationships with current and potential individual, corporate and organizational donors to identify funding opportunities and new revenue growth.
  • Supervise and direct the work of the Development Team.
  • Work in close partnership with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors as needed.

Development Responsibilities

  • Create and implement the annual development plan and strategy.
  • Identify and cultivate prospective major gifts, corporate and planned giving donors.
  • Initiate, plan, support and participate in all fundraising solicitations, including direct mail, online campaigns, special events and beneficiary events, and partnerships.
  • Oversees the maintenance of Special Love’s donor base for accuracy, ensuring donations are processed accurately and in a timely manner, donors are acknowledged promptly, and donor files are updated regularly.
  • Development and execution of Special Love’s Annual Gala and Special Love Golf Tournament, collaborating with volunteer fundraising committees to set and reach annual goals, coordinating volunteers; coordination of event logistics, budgets, and publicity; cultivating sponsorships; managing auction and in-kind donation solicitations; maintaining the event and volunteer database.
  • Travel is necessary to be successful in cultivating, soliciting and stewarding donors.
  • Coordinate development of publications to solicit donations and raise awareness of needs that require funding.
  • Serve as public spokesperson on museum needs and fundraising activities.
  • Maintain high ethical standards for fundraising activities and train new board members and committee members on those standards.
  • Train and lead other staff to support fundraising and marketing efforts.


  • Education: BA is required.
  • 5+ years of demonstrated leadership success in non-profit fundraising and development, including cultivation and solicitation of individual donors, foundations, and corporations, as well as grant writing and grant management.
  • Proven leadership and management capabilities and experience.
  • High energy, positive attitude, flexibility, teamwork, and attention to detail; high degree of initiative.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to prospect, cultivate, and manage new donors.
  • Strong relationship-building skills.
  • Willingness to engage in significant travel regionally and nationally.
  • Good computer skills and knowledge of database programs.


The salary range for this position is $100,000 – $120,000. Special Love offers a generous benefits package, including PTO, health insurance, retirement plan, and the ability to remote work 3-4 days a week.
