BRASS Weekend 2019 – How Great Thou Art!
BRASS Weekend 2019, held March 8-10 at the Outdoor Learning Center at Horizons – Valley Pike in Harrisonburg, included an afternoon painting project that elicited some amazing artwork (scroll down for photos). Siblings had the chance to express themselves and enjoy the spotlight for a change, something that doesn’t always happen in their experience.
BRASS Weekend, which hosted 110 people, also featured traditional camp activities like sports (lots of them), crafts and woodworking, and games. We also included a karaoke contest, a dance, and other music-themed fun in anticipation of BRASS Camp in late July (see below). This year’s edition will enjoy a “BRASSapalooza” theme with much musical merriment in store.
Feedback from the weekend have been stellar – like this comment from a hospital ambassador in DC:
“One of our kiddos went to BRASS this past weekend and LOVED it. The family had nothing but rave reviews. He’s really a kid who needs that kind of support, too, so we can’t thank you enough.”
Our volunteers made it possible – most were cancer siblings themselves, so they had a unique understanding of the needs and abilities of the campers. Siblings of cancer patient suffer fear, confusion, and isolation and BRASS Weekend provided not only a break, but also a chance to be heard – and the opportunity for siblings to express themselves.
More BRASS fun is coming on July 21-27 at Camp Maria in Leonardtown, MD, when we take BRASS Camp to Southern Maryland. Click here for an application and watch Special Love’s website and Facebook Page for more details or call us at 888-930-2707 for info.
