A Winter Weekend to Remember ❄️

Each winter, something truly special happens at Special Love. Our annual Winter Weekend takes place, which is a three-day escape created to give families of children with cancer, bereaved families, and survivors the chance to rest, reconnect, and simply enjoy being together—without appointments, alarms, or expectations.

From skiing and snowboarding to tubing, Bingo, and cozy movie nights, Winter Weekend is an unforgettable experience designed for the whole family.

Kicking Off the Weekend

Families arrived on Friday evening, checked in, settled into the lodge, and picked up everything they needed for the days ahead. For many, simply arriving marked the beginning of a much-needed pause. The night concluded with a warm welcome and orientation, offering space to reconnect with familiar faces, sing a camp song, and meet new Special Love families.

Snowy Adventures and Unscripted Joy

Saturday was filled with snowy adventures and the freedom to move at each family’s own pace. Children participated in ski and snowboard lessons, many of them experiencing the slopes for the very first time. The beginner slopes were alive with proud smiles and moments of confidence-building joy.

Inside, families found warmth and connection through coloring, games, and movies throughout the day. That balance—activity without pressure—meant everything to our families. As one parent shared, this weekend was “the best trip we’ve taken as a family in four years,” highlighting their child’s absolute joy on the slopes, the belly-aching laughter, and the relief of not having a strict schedule. That sense of freedom and fun is exactly what Winter Weekend is meant to provide.

The evening brought everyone together for Bingo Bash, a favorite Winter Weekend tradition—this year made extra special by our main sponsor and new friends at Deloitte. Their team led the games with incredible enthusiasm, turning Bingo into one of the most exciting, laughter-filled nights we’ve ever experienced. The room buzzed with friendly competition, cheers, and shared celebrations.Shape

A Day to Breathe and Reconnect

Sunday continued with more ski and snowboard lessons for all and relaxed indoor activities for those wanting a quieter pace. Families chose how to spend their time—whether taking turns on the slopes or curling up inside with crafts and movies. The day ended with a cozy movie night, sponsored by our friends at Specialized Engineering and Mountaineer Popcorn, a crowd favorite!

This activity gave our parents a chance to sign-in their children and enjoy some parents-only time. Some chose to gather nearby while others headed off to quiet time. Some of the parents even banded together to put together a spontaneous ice cream party which they hosted for the kids after the movie!

Heading Home with Full Hearts

On Monday, families packed up and headed home—tired, smiling, and carrying memories that will last far beyond the winter season. Winter Weekend isn’t just about snow or activities; it’s about pulling families away from the chaos of pediatric cancer, even briefly, and giving them space to relax, laugh, and feel normal again.

Thank you to the generosity of our supporters and sponsors for helping make this unforgettable weekend possible—and for helping us create a place where joy, connection, and hope take center stage.
